It’s good to be home. After a 21month stint in and around Australia, it’s nice to be back where the beer is cheap and I’m not the one with the funny accent.
While my travels took me to many cities and many different takes on “bike culture”, none of them compared to that of the US. Of course that can be expected in a country where the size of the bike industry is comparable to that of California. There is bike culture there and my journey enabled me to see many different facets of it. One thing I kept thinking along the way was how cool this or that was, but it just didn’t stack up to Minneapolis. Of course the messenger culture easily out weighed that of my beloved Milwaukee and the Twin Cities, but with a lot more couriers in a lot bigger cities, that is only to be expected.
Landing in Milwaukee, there was no shortage of bicycle related tom-foolery, so let me share!!
Week one. The “Tour d’ Farce”, a splendid bike ride with a hundred or so folks to some of Milwaukees’ best watering holes.

The "Host with the Most" sportin his new sticker.
The following day I pulled out the Pug, that I wish I had taken with me because of the abundance of rough terrain and beaches in OZ, and did a bit of beach riding along the shores of Lake Michigan. To my pleasant surprise when I hit the sand, there was already a set of Larry tracks on the beach!!

Although I am enthusiastic about the potential of a number of people riding my stretch of beach, it was a bit disheartening to have to share my “secret place” with other interlopers. However, I no longer have to wait for Trevor, Hurl, Brauer and Rollin to get their shit in gear and get down here for someone to enjoy the splendor of the “mid-west coast” with!
